Tennis star Naomi Osaka stated Monday she needs to be on prime type on the Olympics and can participate in press conferences, after pulling out of a number of tournaments citing her struggles with melancholy and nervousness.
The world quantity two advised Japan’s nationwide broadcaster NHK she was on the brink of play on house turf on the pandemic-postponed Tokyo Games, after having withdrawn from Wimbledon and the French Open.
“I am preparing myself little by little so I can be at the top of my game for the Olympics,” the 23-year-old wrote in a message printed by the broadcaster.
“Since getting the attention of the world, I’ve always had bouts of anxiety. This is especially the case in the lead up to big competitions.”
Osaka set off a debate about psychological well being in June after abandoning her French Open marketing campaign only one match in over a dispute on media duties.
The Japanese participant had stated post-match information conferences had been detrimental to her psychological well being and likened them to “kicking people when they’re down”.
She later revealed her battle with melancholy and nervousness in a publish on social media, saying she needed to take time away from the sport to get higher.

In the message printed by NHK, Osaka stated she was “proud” to play for her nation on the Games, including that she would participate in information conferences whereas giving consideration to her psychological well being.
She was fined $15,000 and threatened with disqualification from Roland Garros after refusing to honour obligatory media commitments.
French Open organisers protested that that they had handled her with “care and respect” after they had been accused of being heavy-handed.
Osaka’s agent stated final month that she had withdrawn from Wimbledon to spend time with family and friends.
But he added that she was “excited to play in front of her home fans” at Tokyo 2020, which begins on July 23.
