No Jupiter Can Extend Buhari’s Tenure Beyond 2023 Even If Elections Don’t Hold In South-East—Adegboruwa

Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa (SAN), has mentioned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) can not lengthen the tenure of President Muhammadu Buhari past the statutory 2023 even when elections don’t maintain within the South-East area.

Adegboruwa mentioned on Sunday that the warnings issued by INEC to arsonists burning its workplaces within the South-East mustn’t translate into threats that the present authorities’s tenure may very well be prolonged if elections fail to carry within the South-East.

In a launch, the human rights lawyer added that the scenario within the North-East was worse in 2015 when the nation held elections that introduced in Buhari.

He mentioned, “We are a nation ruled by legislation and an important one is the structure. The tenure of the present President can’t be prolonged by one second; whether or not Nigeria burns or rain or brimstones fall from heaven. As lengthy as we’re nonetheless working this structure, the tenure of this president is predictable, it’s decided, it’s statutory; no person has any energy to increase it.

“Even if election doesn’t maintain, that won’t result in the extension of the tenure of the present President. The structure is obvious about what occurs if election doesn’t maintain. Having mentioned that, there isn’t a motive why election mustn’t maintain in Nigeria. The scenario we now have within the South-East now just isn’t as unhealthy as what we had within the North-East in 2015 and elections held efficiently then. So, it’s attainable to isolate explicit zones and areas the place there could also be violence for election to carry in different areas the place there may be peace and when there’s a return of peace, we will all the time return to conduct elections in these locations.

“The time lag for transition is so elongated within the structure that no person can use that (South-East scenario) to beginning a third-term agenda for the present President. It won’t work. Let INEC not promote that dummy to anyone. Whether there are fifth columnists inside this regime which can be being paid to go and orchestrate violence within the South-East by burning INEC workplaces and whether or not even INEC headquarters in Abuja is burnt down, this present regime will expire in 2023!

“No Jupiter can extend that tenure! So, if anybody is doing that for the purpose of getting any illegal extension, they should better have a rethink because Nigerians will not accept it. We will not accept an extension of the tenure of this regime, we will not accept a military rule; we will not accept anything that will elongate this wickedness, suffering and violence! And it is not a new thing for us to demand that the tenure of this regime should end; if the President will not reward us with good governance, at least he can reward us with integrity by sticking to the oath that he took on the 29th of May 2019 when he was sworn in for second term.”

Adegboruwa added that there isn’t a provision for being sworn in for third time period, both by extension or failure to conduct election.

“So, for me, Nigerians are ready; we are not blind people and we are not daft. Whatever is going on in the South-East, in terms of INEC offices, all these press conferences that the INEC Chairman is holding and sending warnings, he is only warning himself; it doesn’t concern us as Nigerians. Whatever happens, this particular Muhammadu Buhari regime will come to an end in 2023. That idea (tenure extension) cannot hold water, nobody should sell it, nobody should dream about it, we will not accept it as a nation,” he added.
