Cattle thieves kill 10 vigilantes in Zamfara ― Police

Gunmen believed to be cattle thieves have shot lifeless 10 vigilantes in Zamfara state, police stated Sunday, within the newest violence to hit the restive area.

But native residents stated 21 folks had been killed and 16 had been critically injured within the assault on Ruwan Today village late Saturday.

The gunmen opened hearth on the vigilantes exterior the village within the Dansadau space, stated Zamfara state police spokesman Mohammed Shehu.

“The vigilantes went after the bandits to retrieve cows rustled from the village but the bandits laid ambush on them,” Shehu instructed AFP.

Resident Dahiru Abdullahi stated the gunmen stormed the village on bikes and opened hearth on the vigilantes.

“We lost 21 people in the attack while 16 others were seriously injured,” he stated.

“The bandits came around 5: 00 pm while most male residents were working on their farms far away,” Abdullahi added.

Witness Ila Abubakar stated some residents who tried to withstand the attackers had been overpowered, including: “They made away with several cows.”

Nigeria’s northwest has been wracked by years of violence, involving clashes between rival communities over land, assaults by closely armed gangs, and retaliation strikes from vigilante teams.

The unrest has claimed some 8,000 lives and displaced 200,000 since 2011.

Authorities have performed repeated safety operations and native peace negotiations however have failed to finish the bloodshed.
